Engaging, heart-wrenching and authentic
Mr. Stubbs takes us on a personal, and at times intimate, real-time journey through the soul of a mountaineer… the will, intellect and emotions that drive the desire and fortitude to climb. He does this through a story of friendship, trust, pride, success, loss, grief, self forgiveness, and ultimately the choice to get on with living. His is as much a story about emotional survival as one of physical survival. Neither overly dramatic nor overly written, Stubbs’ effort is a straightforward account of a few days most of us would likely find overwhelming. As such, Mr. Stubbs’ story can connect with your fear of success as well as your fear of failure, while documenting a set of experiences that ran the gamut from exhilarating to horrifying to numbing to reconciling the soul.

Engrossing from beginning to end
The first two-thirds of this book is totally gripping as you follow a team of ice climbers up the vertical side of a mountain in Western North Carolina. For the first time in my life, I felt could understand, truly understand what makes people all of the world want to face this kind of challenge. The details of the equipment, the physical effort, the debilitating disappointments, the unforeseen errors, the abject fear, the ultimate jubilation — it was all there. The last third of the book was emotionally charged with firsthand recollections of an event that no one wants to experience. The reader undergoes the kind of catharsis you usually get from fiction, but in this case it’s an absolutely true story, simply told, but emotionally overwhelming. I’m looking forward to Mr. Stubbs’ next one!

Stunning
I purchased Starshine last night and I finished reading it this afternoon. It was stunning. I couldn’t stop reading until “The End.” And then I yearned for the story to continue. Thank you for sharing this very personal and heart wrenching experience.
